Move of the month
Kingfisher has announced the
appointment of Kate Seljeflot
as its chief people officer.
Seljeflot joins from Costa
Coffee, where she was also chief
people officer and led the global
people strategy. Prior to that
she spent 14 years at Diageo in
various UK and then international
HR roles. Her final position
there was global talent director.
Seljeflot began her career on a
graduate training scheme at
Shell, before taking HR manager
and HRBP roles at the firm.
At Kingfisher she will use her
international HR experience to
support the new group executive
team. She will be based at the
head office in Paddington.
I knew King sher was the
right place for me when…
The CEO and chairman were
really clear about the critical role
that organisation, culture and
talent were going to play in the
upcoming growth story.
I decided to make the move
because… This is an amazing
opportunity to be part of the
next chapter of growth for a
leading international retailer. I
love the pace and the intensity of
the retail sector, as well as how
integral a highly-engaged and
skilled workforce is to
succeeding in this environment.
I’m most excited about…
Learning a new industry in
some familiar and some new
areas and being part of a
wide-ranging transformation.
My biggest challenge in my
new role will be... Working
with the team to get the right
balance between group-wide and
local people priorities. I’m
convinced the emphasis needs to
be firmly on locally-built
strategies, but there are also a
small number of key areas where
we must leverage the power of
the group to drive business
success and differentiate
Kingfisher as an employer.
The biggest lesson I’ve
learned from my previous
roles has been… That building
a strong, positive and distinctive
culture is the foundation of
success. While culture is the
work of all leaders, the people
function needs to play a
disproportionate role in getting
this right.
The toughest point of my
career has been… Navigating
some of the cultural differences
between two businesses and two
teams post acquisition.
If I achieve one thing in my
new role... It would be to be a
part of building a really strong,
high-performing, inclusive
leadership team who have
genuine pride in each other’s
successes and the difference they
have made.
